Golden State Showdown Week 5: Recap of the Action Packed Matchups

Featured Showdown: Carlmont vs. Sacred Heart Prep 


Sacred Heart Prep entered Friday’s tilt with Carlmont riding a two-game win streak, and they will carry a third into their next matchup. The Gators put together a strong all-around effort to secure a 20-6 victory over the Scots.


Sacred Heart Prep was led by senior standouts #50 Ryleigh Longaker and #21 Sanaia Shields, who showcased their leadership on both sides of the ball. The duo guided the Gators’ offense and defense, setting the tone for their teammates.


For Carlmont, senior quarterback #10 Lauren Greene showcased tremendous leadership, working closely with her fellow senior co-captains to keep the Scots competitive throughout the game. #3 Samantha Tow brought relentless intensity on both sides of the ball, while sophomore captain #15 Callie Hernandez continued to make her presence felt with strong all-around play.


Looking ahead, Sacred Heart Prep will face Archbishop Riordan at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, while Carlmont will take on Mills at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.


Matchup 2:Willow Glen vs. Andrew Hill Recap


Willow Glen and Andrew Hill went head-to-head in a close matchup that ended with the Eagles pulling out a 12-7 victory. The loss snapped a strong winning streak for the Willow Glen Rams, while Andrew Hill proved they were ready for the moment.


Senior quarterback for Andrew Hill, #16 Annaliyah Felix threw for 226 passing yards and connected with senior #14 Quetzali Alvarez for the game-winning touchdown in the final minute.


The standout of the night was senior #22 Yesenia Fonesca, who dominated on both sides of the field with two defensive interceptions, one touchdown, and seven catches for 114 yards.


These two teams will see each other again later this month. Stay tuned for the rematch on October 21 to see who rises to the top.



Matchup 3: Berkeley vs Saint Mary’s


St. Mary came out strong in the 1st quarter with QB #2 Gabby Clement connecting with #3 Elia Kudemus for the opening touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.


In the 2nd quarter, the defense set the tone as #14 Mayari Negron-Gonzales grabbed an interception, followed by another Clement-to-Kudemus touchdown to extend the lead to 12-0. Negron-Gonzales later added a pass deflection, and #6 Levi Nguyen came up with another interception to close out the half.


The defense kept rolling in the 3rd quarter as Negron-Gonzales secured her second interception of the day. Clement and Kudemus continued their hot streak with a third touchdown connection, followed by a completed conversion to Kudemus, pushing the lead to 19-0.


In the 4th, Clement found #12 Beatrice Branagh for a touchdown and then ran in the conversion herself, giving St. Mary a commanding 26-0 advantage. Despite a late interception and two scores from the opponent, St. Mary held strong to secure the 26-12 victory. Berkeley will be moving on to the next matchup against Encinal High School and St. Mary’s will take on De Anza as a league matchup.
